Painting Stories

Some people use words to tell their stories, while others use songs or even pictures. Some, tell their stories through strokes and shades. Some transform the the sun into a yellow spot, while others, the yellow spot into the sun. Painting is just like music, there is rhythm. Its flows. A painter is always a good story teller. He does not need to speak. His work speaks for itself. At times, it could inspire and move you to do something of your own. At CAVA, the painting department is said to be one of the best departments. Stories get turned into colorful imagery. There is a very mystical aura surrounding the place.
Only the best get selected in this department and out of them, one particular person stands out. Due to his charm and warmth, he could easily be called one of the most friendliest people on campus, who paints his stories and words aren't necessary anymore. Introducing :-

Rahul Ravishanker.

A student of painting and graphics at CAVA.

Since when have you been interested in art?

'Both my parents are artists. My mom was a student here at CAVA. So, since I was little I have always been around art and artists and I'm very passionate about art. It was just meant to be.'

Was painting always you first option?

'Not really. I wanted to get in to the applied arts department. Animating and things like that. But when it came to the time for me to choose, it didn't really speak to me. Its a very commercial department. With rules and structure. I wanted to explore more. The painting department was the best choice. There is a lot of freedom in work.'

Has painting been your dream?
'No. To be honest, I had no clue what I was doing with myself. I was just in the 10th grade, you know? But joining CAVA helped me find my dream.'

Who is your inspiration?

'Work wise it has got to be Andy Warhol. Though it really is my father who was my total inspiration. He was the one who pushed me towards the direction of art and he was the one who helped me realise Applied arts wasn't for me. To me, he's God.'

Out of all colleges, why CAVA?

'To be honest, I couldn't deal with school anymore. It was too constricting and there wasn't any freedom for work. CAVA is the only college that doesn't have the 10+2 criteria. And there's a lot of freedom for work, no pressure, no stress. It was the best option for me.'

Where has your work reached?
'There was a painting of mine displayed in Japan. For UNICEF's help a child foundation in 2013.

A painting bought by a man in San Francisco. Again due to copy right infringement, i cannot show you the painting but I can talk about it. Its a painting where buddha is in the ICU. Resting on a lotus flower, with an oxygen mask getting a blood transfusion. The painting depicts Buddha a symbol of peace being critical.'

What advice would you give people who want to pursue art?

'Listen to me carefully. It doesnt matter if you don't know art. Patience and a thirst to learn is what you need. If you have no interest and you are being forced , you can't survive and you will most definitely end up in a mental asylum.'

Who was your motivation at CAVA?

'Rakesh AKA Rocky. i joined CAVA with an idea about drawing and sketching. But when i actually had assignments and had to do object drawings,i realised i wasn't all that good. My object drawings would have a single tone gradient. It was too kiddish. I started looking at Rocky's work. I started sitting next to him when he was working just to see how he renders.I basically learnt how to hold a pencil from him.'

What's the best part about CAVA?

' The positive vibes that i surround myself with is great. Its secluded atmosphere and my amazing friends to me are the best part about CAVA.'

Words Of Wisdom.

A leader is always the one who inspires you to not only bring the best within your self but in others. He also is the one who encourages you to expand your boundaries and help you inspire others to expand their boundaries. Last week we got that one leader who inspires us and encourages us to go beyond what we can do. Introducing Santhosh, our fun loving student secretary!

What changes do you observe in your journey to become an artist in CAVA?

I was the class representative in both 1st and 2nd foundation. Yes, I did have responsibilities but they were limited to my class.

I still remember an incident which took place when we were in our 2nd foundation. We missed our college trip to Hampi due to the misguidance by some of our seniors. That was the moment that I decided to become the Secretary of the college and make a couple of changes so that we could all be one big family. A family called CAVA.

What changes do you want to make?

I do not want to make any major changes with regards to the college. CAVA is a beautiful place and I want to preserve it and see that it runs efficiently. But yes, there is one thing that I would love to change and that is to increase the stipend given to the students so that it could help those who depend upon it.

What message would you like to give the students of CAVA?

Stop Groupism! Like all other places we can see students dividing themselves on the basis of language religion etc. Instead of constricting yourself to only "your" kind of people it would be nice if everyone would break the barriers and help one and other be it in language or their work.

What about the students suffering from inferiority complex?

In my opinion everyone suffers from inferiority complex. The difference is how you decide to handle it.

What would you look back to and be proud of someday?

Alot of our college funds are eaten up for all the wrong reasons. Due to this we find a shortage of funds to aid programs. I would like to make sure this never happens.

What according to you is the best part about CAVA?

Due to a world full of competition, it is very difficult for the society to let you do what makes you happy. Even though some people are brave enough to do it, many places dont give you enough freedom of thoughts and expression. CAVA is the exact opposite though. There is a lot of freedom and you dont get stressed as easily and you are almost always at peace. This for me is the best part about CAVA.

A Picture Worth A Thousand Words

Photography is one of the most important forms of visual arts in the world of arts. Images captured can speak more and reveal more about yourself that anything else. When it comes to wild life photography, a picture should speak for the life captured there.
CAVA offers many talented students, though one in particular stood out of the crowd, introducing to you-
ANOOP RONALD
A first year student at CAVA, his dedication , love for animals and drive to make a change in the world makes him such a great inspiration to all young photographers out there. He is also the blog's official photographer. There is no doubt why.

Since when have you been interested in wild life photography?
'The moment I fell in love with elephants. I felt like I had to do something for the depleting forests in India which meant the loss of elephant habitat. Though my primary interest was IFS(Indian Forest Service) fate had a different plan for me. Due to my grades i took a different route and fell in love with wild life photography, so in the end it worked out perfectly.'

As a student of photography, there must me something you always dreamed of capturing, what is it?
'It has always been my dream to capture a tiger and an elephant in one frame. And I have been successful in doing so.We were in Nagarhole national park and  it had been an hour or so since we had been following the tigers tracks leading to a near by bush. We spot a tiger trying to hunt  Goar (Bison). It wasn't successful in catching its prey and laid down on the grass rolling around. The same moment an elephant comes from the opposite site definitely unaware of the tiger. We stayed back to see the whole scene as we knew something was bound to happen. Possibly due to the vibrations the tiger sprints up and spots the elephant. That was the moment my dream came true.'

Who is your favorite wild life photographer?
'Jayanth Sharma.'

Did you work for any cause?
'I work with an NGO that works towards the conservation of forests so my dream of working in the IFS never really died.'

What advice would you give youngsters interested in photography?
'Patience. Luck is the apex of photography and without patience photography is pointless.'

Out of all the colleges, why CAVA?
'Mysore sits in the midst of wildlife and bird sanctuaries. And CAVA is the only college in India offering a degree in photography and photojournalism. It's the best option.'

Would you recommend CAVA to international students?
Yes. If they are dedicated and hardworking CAVA is the place to be because this stream is going to be the survival of the fittest. Hardworking and dedicated students survive, and as long as they are both, they are good to go.'

CAVA- An Introduction

Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts or CAVA as it is known, is a visual art school in Mysore.

CAVA is situated in the city of Mysore in the state of karnatka in India.
the university is affiliated to the University of Mysore and offers courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, graphics, applied arts, photography and photo-journalism and art history

OUR HISTORY

CAVA was originally started by the Maharajah of Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in 1906 as the  Chamarajendra technical institute. The foundation stone was laid by George V  of the United Kingdom. It was built at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakhs and completed in 1913.
 Krishnaraja Wodeyar the IV

 George V of England

Under independent India, in 1981 the Karnataka state government named the Chamarajendra Technical Institute as CAVA. Following the suggestions of Svetoslav Roerich, CAVA was established on the lines of the JJ School of arts in Mumbai affiliated to the university of mysore that  offered courses at CAVA, while CAVA itself was under administration of the department of Kannada and culture.

\
Svetsolav Roerich
In 2003 the minister of state for Kannada and Culture requested the university of Mysore to completely integrate CAVA.In September 2004, there was an opposition from students, who felt that CAVA would have lesser funds if displaced from its semi autonomous administration under the department of Kannada and Culture.

PRESENT

CAVA offers a 5 course in several disciplines leading to a BFA degree. The disciplines include paintings, graphics, applied art, photography and photo journalism and art history.
commencing from academic year 2002-03 CAVA offers post graduate courses in painting, graphics and sculpture.

CAVA offers tours, seminars and exhibition of works executed by its students and leading artists. Student art works are also exhibitted during dasara festivities.
